Brush Lettering from A to Z

Really nice book for learning to do lettering with a brush pen. Lots of practice pages (I use tracing paper over the pages because I want to preserve the book as is). I have found that as a beginner at modern calligraphy and lettering, I use either Micron pens or Marvy Uchida LePen Flex pens. Im gradually working toward using traditional brush pens. Nice alphabets in a variety of styles.

Hands down the best "step by step" lettering book I have found thus far and I have literally bought them ALL. If you are a beginner and want to learn the basics to lettering with great stroke instructions then this is a great book to start with! I wish I would have found this book when I first started lettering! But I'm still always happy for the extra practice ❤ I wish this book had more in terms of projects and space to practice the blending, shadowing, highlighting and practice pages for combining letters and words, as well as a section specifically for bounce lettering and practice because I've gotten my actual lettering down pretty well but have been struggling with bouncing baselines and etc. So those are the reasons for the 4 stars instead of 5. But again, I wish I would have had this book for the beginning of my journey!! Actually, as a beginner book I would rate this 10 stars so ill change it to 5, just hope those who are more advanced in their journey see this!

This book is awesome. I’ve seen tons of videos of people using their hand lettering talents to write pretty words and I picked this book up to learn some of these techniques myself. It is easy to read, the instructions are straight forward, and there are so many practice pages!! The book also recommends several pens and types of papers to use to get the best results. Also, it NEVER specified that it comes with a brush pen so I am unsure as to why other reviewers are upset about that? It states this book teaches you how to do hand lettering WITH a brush pen, not that it comes with one! The book recommends several options so you can purchase what style and price suits you best. I can’t wait until I’m further into the book and am able to find my own style! As a beginner, I found this a helpful read and well worth the price.

This book is SUPER thorough if you are looking for a great beginner's guide to the foundational skills of brush lettering. There is nothing wrong with the content of the book. It's very well thought out. HOWEVER - I guess my expectation was, "yay I have a book and I have brush pens, let's get started!" But in reality it was more like a text book with a lot of recommendations of things to purchase first that I did not have so I couldn't get started for another few weeks. I have brush pens but they're large brush pens and the book is designed for small. I also didn't realize you're not meant to write in the book because it's not the right type of paper. She warns that it'll ruin your brush pens. You're supposed to lay paper on top of the guide sheets and basically trace instead. Which is fine, if that expectation was set up for me. It would be awesome if maybe the back cover had something like "WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO GET STARTED: ......" or something like that to appropriately set the expectation. Or maybe offer a bundle with the book and pad of paper. And maybe even pens! If it's a book for beginners, please assume I don't have any of these items.

So I have been trying to find something that helped me really put everything that I have been looking at and trying to mimic together. This book was finally it. It gave me that aha moment where it all started to come together and make sense. Being able to see how to break each word down into simple strokes has allowed me to get to the next step of my lettering goals. At first I thought that this book may be too simplistic and I wouldn't get anything out of it, but I was wrong :) I highly recommend it as I feel it will help guide you in the right direction.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who wants to learn brush lettering. The book is thorough and easy to follow. I highly recommend reading through it from beginning to end and completing all of the exercises. There is a lot of great information along the way. Emma Witte is a wonderful teacher. She is knowledgeable and detailed while also being funny and relatable.

I just received "Brush Lettering from A to Z," and am absolutely thrilled with it. The first thing that caught my attention was the fact that the author, Emma Witte, shares the same name as my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother! Both Grandma Emma and her daughter June (my mother) were very artistically inclined, so I wonder if it has anything to do with the Witte genes. I am looking forward to spending many hours perfecting my lettering for use in cardmaking and photo album compilation for family members. I know this book will be a wonderful help.

I bought this book to learn brush lettering and I made the right choice. Explanations were clear. Followed her tips on which brush pen to get and how to practice and it's been working really well for me. I also loved the practice sheet drills.

Perfect for learning lettering in a straightforward and easy to follow way ... lovely hardback book with handy elastic for marking where you are at, r to keep the book neatly, tightly closed... and attach a pen!

A mio avviso è uno dei migliori libri mai provati. A differenza dei classici eserciziari, ci sono molte più nozioni, come ad esempio una sezione molto corposa sui vari tipi di brush pen / strumenti e una bella sezione di composizione.

Easy to understand

Only got this because the one I wanted wouldn't be here in time for the birthday - this beauty came the next day, all wrapped in cellophane, a lovely solid, hardback book with an elastic book closer. I took it out carefully to check and it's great. The paper is lovely and thick, and there is enough instruction and then space to practice. I'm very very happy with it and wish I'd had this when I started, instead of the 4 that I bought myself ;-) Thoroughly recommend for the beginner.
