NOT including EITHER connector, the "wire" length is 3 inches. The cable as a whole, from outside end to end of each connector is 6 inches.

How about polarity? usb-a can be inserted only one way. usb-c can be inserted in 2 ways - cannot this cause damage to the connected usb-a device?

You can put the USB A male into the plug one way so it protects polarity. The USB C Plug doesn’t care which way you put it in, it won't damage the connected USB-A device.
