NVivo 10 Essentials

Not very interesting difficult read and hard to follow

More of a reference book than a practical tome on the use of Nvivo 10 software. There are a lot of spelling errors, nearly one on every page it seemed. This book would be strengthened by more practical examples of studies using this software. Despite its faults, this is a valuable book for anyone considering qualitative research using the Nvivo 10 technology.

This book provides a good overview of the NVivo 10 software but it contains editorial errors that should have been corrected before printing, for the price they are charging. It is a good book to understand the changes on this version of the software, but as the authors indicate it, the best way to learn the software is to play with it.

I decided to purchase this book spur of the moment and forgot that although it might not have a rating on Amazon.co.uk if I scrolled to the bottom I'd find the reviews from Amazon.com . For the price I feel slightly cheated by this book whose main failing is lack of a good editor which as other reviewers have noted is filled with spelling and grammar mistakes on every page - even the backcover has mistakes. After having read Patricia Bazeley's Qualitative Data Analysis with NVivo, which I can highly recommend, I went with this book thinking it would provide me with a guide to NVivo from another perspective. Despite being 347 pages though the left and right margins are around 2 inches, there is a lot of empty white space after pictures, random blank pages, and a tone of space taken up with bullet points and numbered lists. In general the presentation could be a lot better to make it easier to navigate the book and be able to jump in and out. This is especially the case given the book is very much more of a reference manual rather than a 'guide' as it's subtitle claims. Despite these faults I decided to give this book two stars as some of the information will be useful to people - though a substantial part of it can be gleaned from NVivo's own online help. If the editing and presentation are tidied up this book has the potential to be a handy quick reference guide to have by your side to refresh your memory of various features and how to use the program. If you are looking for a way to understand the process of using NVivo with your own research project I would suggest going with Bazeley's book.
