The Penguin Concise Encyclopedia

Highly delighted ,a little hard on the eyes but that's my failing not the encyclopdia's contains words I never even knew existed,great for crosswords.

Found it difficult to get an encyclopedia at an affordable price, this book is well written and informative.I only gave it 4 stars because the print is a bit on the tiny side.

Unfortunate give the encyclopedia was personalised so I was unable to give it as a gift which meant I had to keep it. As far as the enclycopedia is confirmed I am happy with it.

The problem is that which is affecting you, the companies that sell books - no one reads anymore because of the computer and Internet. #2. This book that I ordered was excellent for older children in High School and adults but not for young teenagers for whom I had ordered it. I no longer know what to order! Thank you, if you read this! And, for myself, Carlos Ruiz Zafon greatly amused me. Excellent writer!

Exactly as advertised.used book, but In excellent condition

I bought this book as a present for my mother because her last encyclopedia was published in 1988. It was a good find as there are less general encyclopedias available because most people have access to the internet and do not use books anymore. She was very pleased with it and uses it every day when doing crosswords.

Was virtually like new when it arrived.Very comprehensive and informative.

Disappointed with quality of cover, content leaves a lot to be desired , by comparison to ' New World' poor !

百科事典フェチです。子供の頃買ってもらったジャポニカ以来，1冊（又は1シリーズ）でほとんどの知識が得られる！というので夢中になりました。高校以後は英語，大学ではフランス語，ドイツ語の百科事典も購入。ただスペースの関係があるので、平凡社の世界大百科以外は1冊本に限定。でも、ブリタニカがCDそしてDVDになり、ネットにウィキペディアが登場して以来，急速に本の形態をとる百科事典は衰退しましたね。日本の百科事典は時代に乗ろうという意欲もなくたちまちダウンしましたが（これはおそらく日本文化普及に重大な支障を生じています。１万程度で英語の立派な百科事典がDVDで手に入るのに，ウン十万出してマイナーな日本語の百科事典を買いますか？こんな状態を放置してきたことが、海外におけるオタク以外の真剣な日本語学習熱を冷え込ませている重大な原因の一つです），英米でも，大好きだったどでかいニュー・コロンビア百科事典はとうの昔に絶版，コンパクトで小回りのきくオクスフォードも絶版。私はMac派なので使えませんでしたが、Microsoftの電子百科(エンカルタ？)はまだあるのでしょうか。どちらにしても、紙を使った百科事典の数少ない生き残りがこれ。 前書きによると、項目数約22,000、2006年出版のThe New Penguin Encyclopedia (Third edition)を要約し、アップデートしたものだとあります。項目数・内容ともにかなり不満はあります。たとえば、calendarの定義は、オクスフォードでは、地球の自転と月の公転と地球の公転の関係をまとめたもの、と秀逸な定義がされていたのに、これではユリウス暦やグレゴリオ暦などの一覧表を掲げただけ。ですが，今となっては、トキやニホンウナギ並みの貴重なペーパー百科事典。子供向けではない1冊本の百科事典としては、もうこれくらいしかないのでは。 2007年発行と、すでに７年経った事典ですが，絶滅種の最後の剥製だと思って，買ってやってくれませんか。多少古いとはいっても、このボリュームからすれば特売といっていい安さ。お買い得です。それに、ある程度売れたら改訂版の出版の機会も生じるでしょうし。

This is a great synthesis of human knowledge. The ratio quality-price is simply unbeatable. Thus I recommend this book to those who have some curiosity about the world in which we live.

Very nice and complete encyclopedia. The definitions are really clear and some examples are often added. There are also some maps about countries.
