Personal stories of family members and friends of alcoholics who relate the struggles and cries that often go hand-in-hand with alcoholism; relates how Al-Anon members overcame these seemingly insoluble problems. Review: I love this book - This is one of AlAnon's best books!{AlAnon of course, is a 12 Step program, a spiritually based group, for the families and friends of alcoholics} It discusses, as the title says, using the Al-Anon suggestions in some of the most painful and embarrassing situations in life. This book came out a few years after the influx of many adult-aged offspring of alcoholics to Al-Anon.With these newer members,(generalization alert) :-) came more young people who wanted to express things in a somewhat more outspoken manner. Prior to that time period, these painful experiences were shared one-on-one,of course, but this book was one of the first to be open about some private matters family/friends of alcoholics have coped with. One of the most wonderful things is that a newer person to Al-Anon, or a scared lonely member who isn't opening up to anyone, can read this book, and learn that he or she is not alone with some of the very trying experiences and situations that seem to come with loving or being close to an alcoholic. The experiences are told by the members themselves, and are meaningful and useful for anyone dealing with the family version the disease of alcoholism. I love it and I recommend it. Review: Sage words and insightful - Anyone who has struggled with codependency or has an alcoholic or addict in their life needs this book. Excerpt: โEven the darkest of moments can be faced with a grateful heart, if not for the crisis itself, at least for the growth it can evoke with the help of our Higher Power.โ

Loved the support it gave me. Read daily.

The Original edition which is much better than the current one.
This is the original edition. Later editions have been revised to eliminate any hint of directive language. This is the edition that has the great reading on detachment in which the author tells how she imagined her husband screaming at her from an insane asylum and "drew a window" around him.

Good addition to my other Al anon material
Every piece of information helps in dealing with this devastating disease. Stories in this book help me to remember that we are not the only ones fighting to understand and accept the limitations we have when dealing with this disease.

Lots of great suggestions
Found this book online, had never seen it at a meeting. Have now read it cover to cover, would read a little each night. It is a wonderful book, I highly recommend this, along with going to meetings, a winning combination to get the support I need.

This was exactly the book I required to participate in my Al-Anon. It was in good shape for a used book.
