Prep goes a long way
Gorgeous finish with little effort. I shoe shined my co-moly barrel with 0000 scotchbrite 2" belt then cleaned with denatured alcohol. Should have doubled cleaned with new rag, got some spotting but it was easily cleaned up with sum new 0000 steel wool. First wipe down with new cotton cloth got sum spotting, like case hardening. Cool look!! After 2nd n 3rd coat after light steel wool buff, I had a mirror blued finish! Amazing product and best used outdoors, just in case. Touch up is another case. Action scuffs did not react as well but still provided a nice finish. Different metal.

I've decided that I'm not a fan...
The stuff is incredibly picky about what it's applied to and how it's applied, so much so that it's very hard to get consistent results on two different things. I found that it works best when brand new and fresh, but after even a single use, its effectivity drops off so fast that using it more than once will likely be a disappointment. Yes, I recommend using the entire contents and dipping the part instead of brushing it on. That's because it only works best the instant it makes contact, and wherever else it's spread, it's not as dark. Lastly, it's expensive, enough so that other than tiny touch ups on firearms, I don't recommend it for coating tools - unless you're okay with the blotchy look...

Did not work at all.
Have used this product before with no issues. Bought a bottle and immediately knew something was wrong. Applied a coat as instructions said and the appearance did not change at all, let it dry, buffed and applied 3 more coats before giving up on the product. I dont know whats different or if I got a bad bottle but literally did not change the color at all, I had to double check and see that my bottle said gun blue and not cleaning solvent. Very disappointed.

It actually works like I had hoped it would
I previously tried the birchwood casey permablue gel to reblue my RIA m206 after stripping off the parkerization to not so great results. I’m sure some of it was just me, but no matter how many times I re-did it or how finely I prepped the surface it always came out splotchy. Then I tried this on a whim and didn’t even really prep the surface at all beyond a quick pass with #0 steel wool. Immediately looked 10x better after one application than with 5 or 6 rounds of the permablue. It really doesn’t care about small bits of oil on the steel! This would have saved me so much time and money had I gone with it the first time. Super easy to use, no after-rust, deeper blue than others. Unlike the BC I didn’t have to stop the reaction with water, which meant I could truly work on my revolver without disassembly or worrying about water getting into hard to dry places. Just be safe with it, wear gloves, don’t mind the mild smell, and you’re all set.
