Relying on the tried-but-true odd-couple set up, Perfect Strangers focuses on the comical lives of Larry Appleton (Mark Linn-Baker) and Balki Bartokomous (Bronson Pinchot). Larry is an uptight American who has moved away from his family's Wisconsin home for his own apartment in Chicago. His life is changed forever when his childlike cousin Balki--a sheepherder from the fictional island of Mypos--shows up on his doorstep with the goal of becoming a U.S. citizen. A hit sitcom for ABC that ran from 1986 to 1993, Perfect Strangers offers some heartwarming storylines, a few laughs, and some genuine chemistry between the two leads. The first few years of the comedy are among the show's best, as Larry and Balki get accustomed to each other's ways. Linn-Baker plays the straight man who sets Pinchot up to deliver the best lines. While Pinchot definitely has the showier "fish out of water" part--and "Don't be ridiculous!" tag line that became a catchphrase for a year or two--Linn-Baker creates the more relatable character. He's working in a small shop, but his dream is to become a photojournalist. The show actually does a nice job of making sure Larry never loses sight of his goals, even as Balki is dragging him from one adventure to another. The four-disc DVD set includes all six episodes from the first mini season, as well as 22 episodes from the show's second full season. Other than a "Dance of Joy" extra--which includes a montage of dance clips from the first two seasons--there are no special featurettes. Fans of high definition may be disappointed by the video transfer, which clearly dates the series. At its worst, Perfect Strangers is an outdated show that isn't as funny as it thinks it is. But at its best, it projects giddy innocence and is easy viewing. Flash-forward to 2005 when Pinchot is throwing himself at Janice Dickinson on the reality series The Surreal Life : Now that's not easy to watch. --Jae-Ha Kim Perfect Strangers: The Complete First & Second Seasons (DVD) A slapstick "buddy comedy" that explored the wonderment of a newly arrived immigrant at the ways of America- "The Land of the Whopper." Balki was a young sheperd from the Mediterranean island of Mypos, who showed up unexpectedly at the Chicago apartment of his distant cousin, bachelor Larry. Balki's wide-eyed, fun-loving manner, his nutty myposian customs, and his tendency to take everything American's told him quite literally, promised considerable disruption to Larry's organized life, but Larry took him in. After all, getting started as a sheperd in Chicago was not going to be easy. Review: Of course, their Perfect Strangers. Don't be ridiculous. - What a great comedy! I can't imagine two better guys than Mark Linn-Baker (Larry Appleton) and Bronson Pinchot (Balki Bartokomous) pulling off these `distant' cousins - one from mythical Mypos, the other from Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The comedic timing between them is pitch perfect. In my book any show or film -- especially an American comedy like PERFECT STRANGERS -- that can transcend cultural and generational differences is a true classic. I've run the litmus test on my Malaysian wife, our teenage daughter and her cousins, and they all found the show to be absolutely hilarious. It's so good that all six discs from Seasons 1 and 2 have been played twice -- soon to be the third -- since purchasing from desertcart. Needless to say, we can't wait for Warner Brothers to release the remaining six seasons. I've even read that PERFECT STRANGERS was considered one of Lucille Ball's favourite comedies of the 1980s. And little wonder. The situation comedy and slapstick humour are all pages right out of I Love Lucy - The Complete Series (Seasons 1-6) . My apologies to reviewer, Jae-Ha Kim. I think Ball is a better judge of comedy than you; I don't buy your line that "Perfect Strangers is an outdated show that isn't as funny as it thinks it is." Please, don't be ridiculous! Now, if I really want to nit-pick over PERFECT STRANGERS, I've got to say the digital transfer is pretty shabby at the start. The opening frames for the show seem to be fuzzy VCR clips. Thankfully it's just a minute or so, and the actual content of the show is clear and the audio alright. The packaging is a bit flimsy too. So are the DVD cases; my DVDs fall out of the cases very easily. Otherwise, the clash-of-culture comedy of PERFECT STRANGERS is brilliant...all 28 episodes!!! Review: One of my all-time favorite shows on DVD - One of my all-time favorite shows on DVD!!! Now, if only we can get all the rest of the years... Anyway, this isn't HD because the original wasn't in HD, but other than that the DVD quality was great. It arrived in perfect condition, and I had no problems with any of the discs. This was such a great series! Mark Linn-Baker plays the straight man perfectly, yet he also has an amazing talent for physical comedy - enough to go toe to toe with Bronson Pinchot, which is saying a lot. I'm not sure I've seen another series so adept at physical comedy - at least not since The Three Stooges! This series was seriously funny, yet it also had a lot of heart. It hit on real insecurities, real situations and real family issues, and handled it with warmth, sensitivity and, of course, humor. Usually, the person with the anxiety and insecurities was Cousin Larry, a Midwesterner who tried hard to be a good person, but because of his insecurities he often went overboard. Balki, his long-lost cousin from Mypos, acted as the voice of reason, but also provided a reality check on those situations for all of us, reminding us of what's really important in life. This show ran from 1986-1993. They really need to release the rest of the seasons on DVD as well!!! Come on, Warner Bros! Stop blocking all the videos online if you're not going to give it to us. We'll buy, I promise!

still just as great
As the first time i started watching Perfect Strangers on TV back in 1986. I loved the show then and still do now. I get to watch any episode whenever i choose and still has all the laughs, puns and the Dance of Joy that i love seeing Balki and cousin Larry perform when something great happens or when the mood strikes. This one is packed with 28 episodes encompassing Season 1 and 2 of the show. My favorite is the two parter Snow Way To Treat a Lady. As Larry, Balki, Jennifer get trapped in a cabin after a certain someone professes how great of a skier that he is. But he ends up falling twisting his ankle that seems to switch legs at random moments. They are trapped in an avalanche and the hi-jinks, crying and everything else all come out in this two part episode. Season 2 ends with Larry's sister Elaine stopping by for a visit before she heads off to Big Apple or Pineapple as Balki likes to say. Once Larry finds out his sis isn't going off to college he reminds her on a daily basis that she's making a huge mistake and screwing up her life. But in the end common sense and good ole brother sister love prevail through his outdated and close minded thinking. If anything Perfect Strangers is one of those shows that i grew up with in the 80s that i still love and hold dear even after all this time. It's worthy addition for anyone that hasn't heard of it and for those that have they already know and love that saying Balki says "Don't Be Ridkulous" Good times for all members of the family.

Can I give it more stars??? :-P
I can't tell you how much I love this show. I used to watch it growing up and I'd tape it each week, and watch it over and over until the next weeks show and then tape that and repeat. It's so funny (yet by todays standards it's quite reserved) and enjoyable. I LOVE Balki and Larry and together they had great comic chemistry together. Balki Bartokomous came from Mypos ('in the Meditteranean') to move to the great land of America. He looks up his long lost cousin (seemingly barely related) Larry who himself has just left home for the windy city of Chicago. He can't refuse Balki a night or two in his home, but when Balki does good at Larry's work, he's hired there too and so he stays longer with Larry and so begins their story. Balki plays an innocent type guy with no real life experience who discovers the joys of everyday living and life with the help of Larry in America. His most famous saying is "Of course I do/did, don't be redikalus" and each time I hear that I still roll about laughing (I believe he was nominated for an Emmy once for his role as Balki). You have to do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of this. It's so funny (and fans have waited long enough for it's release). I just hope they bring out the following seasons soon and not make us wait this long again. I love it.

one of the first few to get this wonderful set
It took me a few months to finally post a review for this dvd set. honestly It took me a while to finish seeing all the episodes. once i popped it into my dvd player...ahhh..joy. no more scouring the net and youtube to fine clips of Baiki and cousin larry. The case itself is kinda filmsy and there is no booklet. maybe with the later sets we will have a better quality display. regardless I would pay the same price if it came in a paper bag

Still waiting for Warner Bros. to release ALL of the seasons!
I remember watching 'Perfect Strangers' every Friday night as part of the TGIF lineup... I think I was about 8-9 years old at the time. Even though I didn't understand all of the content of the show, I still thought it was entertaining, interesting, and really funny. Comic sitcoms have really "evolved" since the late 80's, early 90's. I suppose some of the changes are for the better but I must admit, I really miss some of the shows I grew up watching-- for example, 'Growing Pains,' 'The Facts of Life' and 'Just the 10 of us' (wow, I really feel like I'm dating myself!). This DVD is great and I think the episodes are the non-syndicated versions (but don't quote me on it). There are a couple of special features but not really... I was hoping for actor commentary on some of the episodes and maybe some current interviews of the actors, reminiscing about the experience on the show, etc. That being said, I'm just grateful that Warner Bros. released the first two seasons and I'm hoping that they will go further and continue to do so.

Don't make them like this anymore
I love these guys. It just goes to show you what great acting coupled with great writers can do with a sitcom. You can't find good, clean comedy like this on TV anymore. Nowdays they think it has to be laced with bad language and sex to be a hit show. I hope they release all of the episodes on DVD. I will buy them all. I don't know why it was ever cancelled, it was just as funny in the end as it was in the beginning. No, Mark linn-baker wasn't that funny in the short-lived TWINS series, but it's understandable considering the writers it had and the supporting actors. Wouldn't it be great to get these two together again, at least for one re-union episode? I bet they still could make everybody laugh, that is, if the writers were as good as they had before. I wonder if Bronson Pinchot could still do the accent? Well of course he could, don't be ridiculous.

As Good As I Remember!
I never missed an episode of Perfect Strangers when it aired in the 80's, and some of the catch phrases are still classics in my family today--everything from Balki's trademark "Don't be ridiculous!" to "Don't give me that face!" This is a great show the family can watch and laugh at together, and some of the stories are really heartwarming. Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker were fantastic in their roles, and created not only some great comedic moments, but a terrific relationship for those of us who like the buddy show genre. The show has a light-heartedness about it that just isn't there in a lot of current shows. It can be silly at times, but for the most part, it stands up to my memory of it, and remains one of my favorite shows. I plan to purchase as many seasons as they release!!

Awesome
First I love this show, loved it growing up and then after my gran (who raised me so she was my mom to me) & my best friend passed from bone cancer, I watched this show and it made me laugh and helped me pull through a tough mourning of her. Society needs more innocent clean comedy like this instead of the sexually oriented or violent shows they have on tv/movies. I even introduced my grandaughter to watching Perfect Strangers with me on sleep overs and she would ask to watch it and her giggle was straight from the heart and we have fun watching Balki and cousin Larry and order pizza and pj night lol You cant replace gem shows like this and for $15 for the first 2 seasons is a good price and worth it. Videos are good, and I wish I could get the other seasons at this price and dont like when they charge high prices for the other seasons. The dvd set arrived quickly and was new and not damaged and the humour and innocence and fun in the show is priceless. I wish I could have had my gran watch the show before she passed, she would have loved Balki lol

Family show
Watched this show in South Africa in the '80's and it has stood the test of time. Lovely to see my grandchildren enjoying it as much as my children did. A show for the whole family.
