I was finally able to get the system working properly again after several hours of doing a complete factory reset (the reset itself took that long...I'm not including the time wasted trying other "quicker" fixes). This ended up being doubly frustrating because the console froze the first time I attempted the reset, but finally went through on my second attempt. I would have much preferred that this had been done before I received the unit. Since then, everything seems to be running okay. I do live in a bit of fear that whatever caused the original problems with the previous owner's software will rear its head again, but so far (fingers crossed) this has not been in evidence. A fat ps2 or ps2 slim is the best way to play psone and ps2 games as they have full compatibility with psone and ps2 controllers and memory cards. I would say the chances of an older model being bricked by ps3 firmware is too high.
