Stop Shopping... Buy This Mic
Like so many others have said about this kick drum mic, it sounds great!! I did a ton of reading reviews and searching for mics online. I'm glad that I got this Audix D6 I am really impressed with it, and quite surprised at how good the sound was to begin with - plug & play. Full disclosure: I am using the Kelly SHU internal micing system, so my mic is a bit further into the drum than normal. No hole needed in my bass drum head, the cable runs out of the air hole on the bottom of the drum, and to the XLR outside the shell. The back of the mic, about an inch from the inside of the front head. My sound guy likes the way it sounds, beefy with some good attack with it pointing to where the head meets the shell. First time setting it up, and I was done. No need to re-set the position. It required very little EQ. And the build quality is great - like a solid piece of billet aluminum. I highly recommend this!

Solid and Versatile
I ended up getting 2 of these just on the off chance I have a drummer bring two kicks. Sounds best buried well into the port or about an inch off the head, be careful putting one right at the edge of the sound hole, the turbulence will mess with it and it'll be mushy sounding with. Play around with placement to get best results as with any mic. Bright and modern sounding but can get a nice classic thump if you don't over boost it. Can't foresee needing any different kick mic for anything else, with two of these in the kit I'm good to go, they leave me wanting for nothing.

Best kick mic available.
Unless you actually like your bass drum to sound like a cardboard box (d112) or a muffled lifeless thump (beta 52), the D6 is the mic for you. It’s natural response requires almost no eq. Works in the studio and live. I own 2 and I bring them to gigs when I play 2 kick drums and, unless I’m playing a venue of considerable size and quality, they don’t have anything better on hand... or 2 kick mics at all. You can probably buy a better kick mic for a lot more money, but you’d be hard pressed to get a useable one for any less. Of the standard choices, I will only use this one for close mic of a ported drum. Engineers have tried to use other mics on my drums, but a quick A/B test and they’ve all come around and agreed that my D6 sounds better than whatever they wanted to use. You can’t argue with the sound.

Great for Rock and Metal
These bad boys are awesome! I have owned an Audix D6 for years and finally got a second a while back. It does a really good job of capturing the bass from a kick drum or bass cabinet. The microphone is certainly better-suited for hard rock or metal, as it does tend to give a somewhat "scooped" sound, but in a mix, it is not that big of a deal. When recording bass cabinets, I would recommend a good, balanced condenser microphone to go along with this one to make up for the loss of mids. To that point, the Audix D6 does a pretty good job of capturing upper mids, but you may not like the particular frequency it accents. -K

Versatile!!!!
The best and most versatile kick drum mic I’ve ever had. Studio, live, whatever genre I’m working that day…it shows up and shows out!!! Beautiful!

A Must Have Kick Drum Mic!
This is definitely one of the best and should be in everyone’s collection. Definitely gets a lot of punch and boom. Almost effortless with placement, but does take strategy like mixing anything. This is my second one and not because the first one failed, because the first one was so great!

The best floor tom microphone ever!
This thing is amazing. I've tried a few different mic's on floor toms including the Shure Beta 98 AMP, but this blows it away. The low-end response is incredible and truly gets that thick floor tom sound that can resonate in the subwoofers. Make sure you utilize your gates and EQ's responsibly and the D6 will be perfect for your church, concert, or studio recording.
