My husband loves these. You can't beat the price. And they are original as well. The root beer flavor is so good. It brings me back to the good old days.

Yuummmy! Ok, yes, addictive. It takes the edge off if I crave something to eat. These are exactly the taste I remember as a kid when I would get three rootbeer candies for a penny. Ok, I’m old.

As a certified dad with strong opinions about thermostats, lawn edges, and “the good candy from back in my day,” I approached Donty-Tonty DAD’S ROOT BEER BARRELS with extremely high expectations. And flavor-wise? Yeah buddy. One barrel in and I was instantly transported to a time when gas was cheap, bikes didn’t have helmets, and root beer cured everything except responsibility. The taste is spot on. Bold, old fashioned, and so root-beer-y it almost demands you make a “ahhhh” noise afterward. Let’s talk about the barrels themselves. Or should I say… the barrel debris. A noticeable number of these candies arrived broken inside their individual wrappers. Which raises some serious dad questions. How? When? Was there a candy earthquake? Did the barrels fight each other during shipping? I don’t know but I do know I opened more than a few wrappers expecting a proud, intact barrel and instead found what looked like delicious root beer gravel. Still edible, still tasty, but emotionally confusing. On the plus side, this is(was) a 2lb bulk bag, which in dad terms means “I can complain loudly and still keep eating them.” Even the broken ones didn’t stand a chance. They just turned into “sampler pieces,” which I generously did not share. The individually wrapped aspect is great too perfect for pockets, car consoles, desk drawers, or handing one to a kid while saying, “Don’t tell your mother.” So yes, I’m a little disappointed about how many candies were broken in the wrapper. A barrel should be a barrel, not a puzzle. That said, the flavor, nostalgia, and sheer dad-energy of these candies more than make up for it. Would’ve been 5 stars if more barrels survived the journey intact, but I’m giving it a solid 4 stars because even cracked, these candies are still delicious. Make sure to brush your teeth often or end up in the dentist’s office.
