A House for Hermit Crab/Ready-to-Read Level 2 (The World of Eric Carle)

Loved by my 3 year old hermit crab fan
My son is three and my mom recently purchased a few hermit crabs that they care for together. I won't touch the things but he loves to hold them and let them walk all over! He calls them his new pets, even though they're a few months old now (we also have three dogs and a fish tank). I thought he would enjoy this book and was right. The story is very cute and simple, telling the year in the life of this hermit crab. He begins by realizing his current home (his shell) is too small. He finds a new one, but it's very boring and plain. He travels throughout the sea finding different types of sea creatures and asking if they'll join him and decorate his house. Each month finds another sea creature added to his shell. But what happens when he again grows too big for this shell? Will he leave his friends behind? Find new friends? What will he do with his old shell? It's a very cute book and my son frequently asks me to read him the 'hermit crab book'. The illustrations are very colorful and fun as you'd expect if you're familiar with Eric Carle's work. Some of the pages have a lot of text, but it keeps my son's attention. We talk about the different creatures he meets and go through the list each time a new one is added. This one is a new favorite in our house.

Great explanation of what a Hermit Crab is, for a 4 year old
I recently bought a hermit crab hand puppet while on my vacation in Hawaii (from a gift shop). It was for a 4 year old and frankly looked a little scary. I decided to put this really nice book, "A HOUSE FOR A HERMIT CRAB", with the puppet as a gift. The explanation of a hermit crab's life made the puppet less scary and was very educational. By the way...after squashing the fluffy hand puppet into my luggage...I found the exact puppet on AMAZON!!!!!!

Small!!
I loved this book as a child and wanted to share it with my kids! The story and illustrations are great, but I took off one star from this listing for the size! My fault, I should have noted the size when I bought it. When I looked back, the dimensions are listed here. For reference, fits in my hand. It’s ok, but I would like the illustrations to be bigger so we can enjoy them. Would not recommend less you are looking for a small book.

A great adventure down memory lane
This story is nostalgic as I was read the book multiple times as a child. The images and the story are equally charming to me. I appreciate that it is a miniature version. (I have an affinity for mini objects). Now that I am older, the metaphor of the storyline especially resonates with me. It holds even more of a special place in my heart. R.I.P. (On a side note, the museum in Massachusetts is very interesting).
