Is the case water proof?

I would consider the case, water repellent. I wouldn't recommend submerging the case. It closes extremely tight, and it is plastic. I think it's the best I've ever had. Good Luck!

Is the magnet strong? I bought some of these somewhere else but the magnets were so weak it wouldn't stay magnetized to the car.

The recessed magnet is designed to securely attach and hold to any steel surface. If you are experiencing issues, please contact customer service at 800-464-2088.

would a standard BMW key (with computer part) fit in this case?

The key case's dimensions are: 4-11/16in (119mm) L x 2in (51mm) W x 1-3/16in (29mm).

Anyone know why the description includes this caveat? "...not recommended for automotive applications"

Probably because it is not water tight. I found it to be fine, it's under my truck on the frame. Holds just fine on good metal.
