What kind of plastic is this?

Not sure what kind it is. We use them for the camp grounds and for our clambake. They aren't as thick as the ones you buy ice in at the stores. However they did the job for us with our ice maker. Sure if you smack it on the ground too hard it's going to break. That's like any plastic.

We need this for a cooler. As the ice melt does it leak?

For the most part no. The top is closed with a twist tie so if the bag is on it’s side it’ll leak.
