Color Theory for the Make-up Artist: Understanding Color and Light for Beauty and Special Effects analyzes and explains traditional color theory for fine artists and shows how to apply it directly toward make-up applications Make-up artists control color the same way a painter does. They choose color palettes, match colors, blend new colors, and create designs on a canvas that is always changing. Some colors cancel others, some balance each other, and some oppose other colors. However, painters seldom have to consider inconsistencies in how their art will be lit and where it will be displayed the way that a make-up artists does. This book teaches how to mix any color using just red, yellow, blue, and white. It discusses the reason for variations in skin colors and undertones, and how to identify and match these using make-up, while choosing flattering colors for the eyes, lips, and cheeks. Colors found inside the body are explained for special effects make-up, like why we bruise, bleed, or appear sick, and ideas and techniques are also described for painting prosthetics. The book also explains how lighting affects color on film, television, theater, and photography sets, and how to properly light a workspace for successful applications. Whether you are a professional or a beginner, you will never stop learning. There will always be new products, techniques, and fashions – this book provides guidance and inspiration to keep practicing, creating, and honing your skills. A good resource for understanding color theory as it relates to makeup application
As a professional makeup artist and educator, I'm glad to know that there is a resource like this for students of the profession. Chapter 1 covers all the aspects of color - classification, relationships, attributes, mixing, color systems (e.g. RYB, RGB and CMY) and optical illusions in color, which can be helpful for professionals attempting to make color choices in their makeups. There is some confusion in this chapter because in most cases, the author doesn't reference her figures (illustrations, charts, paintings, photos) in the text, so the scholarly practice of labeling these visual resources falls short. For example, the reader would be hard-pressed to truly understand what the Munsell Color System looks like or how it works because there is no visual reference. The author adds a layer of credibility because she is a fine artist, and the references to color used in painting feeds the imagination of the reader. The remaining chapters all offer something for the aspiring and even the seasoned makeup professional. I do hope that in the next edition, that some of these minor technical problems will be solved, and what will remain is a really terrific resource.

Color Theory for Every One Highly Recommended Book.
This book isn't just for make up artists. All of us can learn something about color theory in a way to that relates to the world around us, because of the care with which Katie wrote this and the impeccably selected illustrations. If only all authors and experts put as much care into their books as Ms. Middleton put into this one. Not just for make up artists!

This book is packed with information – it’s definitely a must-have for every makeup artist’s library (including special fx makeup). It’s easy to read and understand and thoroughly explains how you see and use color. The lighting section was really helpful, too, and the accompanying graphics are an added bonus. Middleton has done a great job researching, writing, and illustrating (including some of her own work).

Really good information and diagrams
I love this book! There are few times I had to read back because the amount of information can get overwhelming, but wow did they ever do a good job explaining colour theory and then applying it to makeup. I will definitely be referencing some of the images that were added in when I try to mix my own colours, including when I paint. It is very technical and isn't meant to be a guide for application of makeup, so keep that in mind.
