Jason Dandruff Relief Treatment Shampoo, 12 Oz

I have been sufferring with really itchy flaky scalp sinnce i was a teenager. The severity was very intermittent and i have not really tried any prescription shampoos even though theyve been prescribed by my dermatologist. I have occasional eczema type skin patches on the scalp and these have sometimes developed into sores :( This winter has been the worst experience so far which is why i decided to use this product! I have been using this product for almost 2 weeks, which is only 3 times bc I don't wash my hair every day (will post an updated review following long term use). First impressions - 1) I noticed a bunch of other reviewers mentioning an unpleasant smell. I did not experience this! My bottle did NOT smell like sulfur but it also didn't have a really nice shampoo smell either. I generally use organic unscented shampoos so for me not having a super strong floral or "shampoo" smell was not an issue. Actually, if I had to really pick something that this shampoo smelled like I would settle on a gentle mouthwash :p 2)Feeling on the scalp - this shampoo feels generally nice on the scalp. It doesn't lather very well, which is okay for a medicated shampoo that has a primary purpose of reducing scalp irritation. It's pretty goopy when it comes out of the bottle, so I found it very helpful to thoroughly wet my whole head for a few minutes before using this shampoo. The wetter the hair the easier I found spreading this shampoo all over the scalp. There is a slight tingling sensation after it's applied, but it's not painful or unpleasant. It was not painful to have this shampoo touch some of the sore areas that are on the scalp; in fact the shampoo was very soothing on those areas 3)Effectiveness - so far I'm very impressed with this shampoo! Like I mentioned earlier I have been struggling with a very itchy, flaky scalp with occasional sore areas and even bleeding from scratching too much. After using this shampoo only 3 times (I was my hair every few days) the itchiness has almost completely disappeared and the 3 small sores have healed completely! The urge to scratch has diminished by about 80-90% And when I do scratch my head there are barely any flakes (this is a HUGE improvement since I used to have flakes appear after even lightly touching my head). Overall, I use this shampoo every other time I shampoo my hair (so skip using it every other time). I also follow with a regular shampoo after using this one and then with a regular conditioner. Also I don't leave it on my scalp for more than 5 minutes since even a few minutes seems to have made a big improvement for me!

I was really hesitant after reading the mixed reviews. Some said it didn't work; some said it did; some really complained about an obnoxious foul/medicinal stench. First off a summary of my review: - Individual with seborrheic dermatitis as a result of hair color treatment with excessive dandruff and plaque, peeling, flaking, and fiery itchy burn. - Apply said all natural product whose scent is on par with that of Selsum Blue, but with significant less foaming/sudsing (image using 3 times the dollop size you typically use with your regular commercialized shampoo) - Said all natural product alleviate and eliminated color-treated scalp condition and improved condition equal to and above pre-color treated scalp condition; however, did not completely eliminate (but did alleviate) peripheral conditions as a result of scalp condition. - Result: I'm a fan! Thanks for fixing my scalp and making me and my home and all around me better and happier. A little history abt my problem: I typically use Head & Shoulders Ocean Lift or Refresh as I suffer from frequent dandruff and mild scalp itchiness. Overall it was kind of a hit or miss affair with dandruff. As I got older, I started coloring my hair more to cover my premature grays. Over the span of 18-24 months of monthly/every touch ups and semi-annual full color treatments, my dandruff gradually went from sometimes to frequently to incessant. My scalp started itching at all hours and I could feel a fiery burn where there was the most dandruff and itchiness. The back of my ears (where my glasses go behind my ear all & all the way past that to my lobe where earrings go) became scaly [plaque is the medical term], lightly pus/moistened (like it felt slick & wet but didn't feel oily, and smelled like pus) and smelled infected. The regular use of my Head & Shoulders shampoo felt great and stopped the burning itch... until my hair/scalp was dry and no longer wet from washing and then - voila, return of the fiery burning flaking itch! Some times, my hair would be wet, but scalp had dried and the burn was back! It was so bad, I started waking up aware that I had subconsciously scratched and peeled my scalp and back of ears bloody in my sleep and the skin was still flaking off! I started noticing my outer ear canal also starting to flake and peel. Sounds disgusting right? I was desperate to rectify the situation! I have since gone au naturale - beauty is not worth the horrible flaking, burning and (what felt like) spreading skin condition and the flaking/scratching/shedding everywhere. Search for a cure/relief: I attempted to try a tea tree oil, plantain oil infused scalp spray; frangipani and then a morrocan oil treatment - none of them worked too well. As soon as my scalp dried after these treatments, it went right back to fiery burning please-rip-the-skin-off-so-it-won't-burn-and-itch-no-more supreme discomfort. I think they had a very minimal effect, but not enough to alleviate my condition in any sense. I asked my primary care physician what could be done to alleviate the feeling and useless doctor that they were diagnosed it as seborrheic dermatitis and said there really isn't any remedy other than frequent cleaning and moisturizing. If and when I develop bloody, pus-filled sores and wounds, then they'd be able to help. So I was thinking OMG, great, now which of the million products on the market will truly clean (without over-stripping) and moisturize my poor scalp?? I certainly didn't want to ever get to that crazy bloody skin-rotting-looking stage!!! Finding JASON Natural Cosmetics Dandruff Relief Shampoo [Rosemary, Neem, Tea Tree 12oz]: Desperately searching the market for a natural shampoo with sulfur (which something about hair color treatments strip from your head), tea-tree or other natural recommended moisturizing oils, and other wholesome goodness (because I wasn't having any luck with the products from Sally's, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods), I stumbled upon Jason Natural Costemics Dandruff Relief Shampoo on Amazon. Two uses of this shampoo STOPPED the burning and excess flaking and scaliness of my scalp and helped alleviate some of the burning feeling also on the back of my ears. This is not to say this product is a miracle shampoo; I still have some mild itchiness at the places were I had the worse case of burning/itchiness and depending on how much I sweated during the recent heat waves, I had buildup and plaque (which of course scratchy fingers that they are now accustomed scratched off) , but it is back to a very, very mild and privately manageable level. No more embarrassing giant flakes, no more shedding as I turned my head, no more burning, no more wake up in the middle of the night with my pillow covered in little/big/round flakes, no more blood under my fingernails, and no visible shedding everywhere! I can actually toss my hair now and not expect to see GIANT flakes (as extreme as say, pieces as wide as my pinky nail) fall on my desk, arms and shoulders. Prior to the exacerbation from the color treatments, my scalp (especially the hairline near my forehead) would be visibly flake-y and would occasionally fall off onto my shoulders and desk by itself or when I rubbed my forehead. Now no flakes fall unless I choose to put my nails to my scalp and scratch it off myself; heck, since there's not even the slightest irritation, there really isn't even that anymore! My ears are still itchy, the plaque (flakiness/peeling) is still present, the inside of my ears still get a bit of flaky build-up, but the condition overall is vastly improved (especially the scalp!!!) compared to where it was before I started using this product. I find the use of my conditioner tends to make my scalp itchier than when I just cut it out or use the all natural tea tree oil spray conditioner. I've started mixing JASON shampoo treatments in between my Head & Shoulder shampoo (as JASON is very low-suds and I find I have to use more than a quarter-sized dollop to get it spread/suds up my scalp & hair) and once you get used to JASON you'll be surprised how even 1/3 of the amount of your regular shampoo (in my case, H&S) is like 10x foamier than JASON. Also the smell? I have used Selsum Blue and it smells similar to Selsum Blue people; actually Selsum Blue smells stronger than this does. It makes me wonder if the people complaining about the smell ever even used Selsum Blue because if they had they wouldn't complain about how "bad" it smelled. Personally I think it smells fine.

After struggling with dandruff sipnce puberty, in my late 20s I found out it is caused by seborrheic dermatitis. The doctor was of no help, besides a diagnosis. I've used many dandruff shampoos since I was a child. In my middle 20s it got worse and went from flakes to an itchy, red crust on my scalp. I still get flakes too but I got this severe issue. Dandruff shampoos do treat seborrheic dermatitis, but when my condition got worse it got harder to control. Also a lot of dandruff shampoos seem harsh on hair. This shampoo is actually sulfate-free and gentle on hair. Maybe too gentle, it doesn't seem to cleanse well so I also use another shampoo also. The salicylic acid in this exfoliates flakes and crust, sulfur kills the fungus on the scalp that causes dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (most dandruff shampoo ingredients are antifungals) as does the tea tree oil, and the camphor and menthol can reduce itch. Keep in mind the tea tree oil, camphor and menthol could all irritate skin if you have very sensitive skin, I have sensitive skin and this doesn't seem to irritate it but these ingredients are all potential irritants. They do serve a purpose in this shampoo, and most people should tolerate it fine. You do have to leave it in a few minutes and allow it to work. I don't like that it doesn't foam since you have to use a lot of it to get it through your hair and scalp. The smell isn't strong. It isn't fragranced, which I prefer since fragrance irritates my skin, so it won't smell like roses. A tip for you, if you have bad scalp itch consider dropping products with fragrances. Fragrance chemicals can irritate skin and cause itching, and a lot of hair products are heavily fragranced. I find this good for my dandruff shampoo. I've been using it a few years. It doesn't damage my dry curly hair, it doesn't irritate my skin like many dandruff shampoos do, and it works for me unlike most dandruff shampoos. Personally I have also found it necessary to apply Dermarest psoriasis gel to my scalp after shampooing, it has salicylic acid and a zinc ingredient that both benefit my condition. Between the two products my flakes and crust stay gone for 24 hours.

I fell in love with this stuff many years ago when every other dandruff shampoo I tried only ever made matters worse, but this cleared it up within a couple washes. Years later once I tracked it down again (the bottle design had changed significantly), I introduced it to my (now) husband who insisted he'd tried EVERYTHING (and did regularly use tea tree shampoo). He was also astounded to no longer be a walking snow globe. BUT—it does not smell great. Reminds me of a wet dog. However, the smell fades once your hair is dry, and (at least in my case) you only need to use it a few times for a lasting affect, at which point you can revert to your regular shampoo. You can also follow it up with another shampoo to help wash the scent away, and/or use leave-in products with more pleasant scents to mask it.

I have no idea if this works, and I'm never going to find out. The smell. Good gawd the SMELL. Imagine you got yourself a big pile of Necco wafers and wintergreen life savers, heaved on a box or ten of mothballs (heavy on the naphthalene), smeared them whole mess with mentholatum and horse liniment, and soaked the whole thing in campho-phenique (camphor and phenol, for those unfamiliar) with just a tiny soupcon of turpentine. The resulting unholy miasma is still less noxious than the stuff I just made the exceptionally poor decision to put on my hair. Its mere presence when I poured some in my hand literally burned my eyes in the shower, but I thought, you know, it won't be that bad once it's rinsed out. Reader, I went back and washed my hair again more than once because I couldn't stand the smell of my own self. I followed that up with a fairly highly scented conditioner, but I'm STILL catching whiffs of horse's arthritic patoot when I turn my head. It'll be fine once it's dry, right? Well, do you ever intend to get sweaty, caught in the rain, or wet your hair again? Cause it's gonna come roaring back in all its dubious glory. I can't stand those little baby hairs touching my face and tickling when I'm working out and sweaty, so I got some cute fabric headbands (not sweatband fabric). I gave myself a little dermatitis from leaving them on too long (as long as you're sweaty, may as well go ahead and do a little work around the house and take the dog for a walk, right? well, take the headband off FIRST). All that to say that I've got a little spot behind my ear that's itchy and flaky, and it needs to be addressed. I've got some Italian keto (antifungal, not the diet) shampoo that does NOT stink and has resulted in rapid improvement, but I thought I'd just grab this since it's a different type of treatment to get us over the finish line. Apparently the Italian stuff has spoiled me because it just has a kind of gentle whiff of rosemary, like mild Christmas candles. Also, I know full well what the active ingredients here smell like, and it AIN'T this nastiness. Those smells were a CHOICE. I'd be happier smelling like overboiled eggs from the sulfur than... whatever this is. They did this to us deliberately and they should be ashamed of themselves. I may have to go shower again, and if you're counting, that's two conditionings and three hair washes on the day, the latter two of which to get rid of the stench of the first. I am a firm believer that just because you've got a medical issue requiring a pharmaceutical-adjacent treatment, that doesn't mean you have to have a miserable experience, so this is headed straight for the trash. There are absolutely effective treatments for skin and scalp issues that are pleasant to use, or at least not so dreadful. The Italian shampoo came from this platform, for the record. It maybe cost $20ish for the same size bottle as this one, so definitely more money -- but you can get something in this same price range at your local drugstore (and probably also on this platform) that does not create fumes sufficient to peel your corneas out of your face when you try to use it. Your itchy scalp is not a moral failing deserving of this kind of punishment. It's just something that needs a medicated shampoo. If you happen to think the smells that I described sound like a good time, or you're of the old school where if it ain't miserable it ain't effective, you may like this. Otherwise give it a miss -- as wide of a berth as you can, to avoid the truly spectacular odor plume.

I used this once and it gave me a headache with how strong the scent is. I don't think it smells bad although the smell definitely reminds me of a health/wellness product or something, but it's just too much. I'm hoping it doesn't smell as strong once my hair dries. This is probably an effective product, but just really intense smell.

I waited three years to post this review. This is quite possibly the best dandruff shampoo on the market for people with moderate to severe dandruff like me. The only review I read was Joel S. Perry’s and I’m so thankful I listened to that review all those years ago because I am literally flake and 99% itch free. I, too, have had dandruff from a young age – 3rd grade. I was furiously scratching at the back of my head one day and my teachers took me to the nurse to check for lice – to their relief it was only dandruff. I would scratch my scalp till it bled, so I took it upon myself to try everything in the drugstore: Nizoral, Selsun Blue extreme, Neutrogena T-Gel and don't get me started on Head & Shoulders! (Is that a joke?) I was so desperate once that I poured vinegar (not diluted) all over my head and I was itch-free for a week! But it never worked again and I could not get that smell out of my hair for days. Then I stumbled across this page, and since then I have been regularly using Jason shampoo – with the exception of a 3 month hiatus once because I had foolishly thought my condition was “cured”. But that was a fluke and my itch came back so I decided to use the shampoo at least 2-3x a week. I’ve managed to figure out a way around the smell because even after all these years, I STILL smell it and it’s not pleasant. My method: The shampoo spreads better when my scalp is already wet so I always do a quick rinse with a tiny amount of regular shampoo. Then I take small amounts and work on different parts of my scalp, rubbing it until the entire scalp is well-coated. However, if you have long hair like me and want to minimize the sulfur smell, ONLY APPLY IT TO YOUR SCALP! It only works on dandruff so applying it to the rest of your hair is a waste and unnecessary! I also use lukewarm to cold water, not hot. For the rest of my hair, I use either conditioner or a strong scented shampoo (Irish spring, or any of the men’s shampoos) because when I rinse out the dandruff shampoo, I don’t want the rest of my hair to catch the scent. I leave it on for a minimum of 10-15 minutes, no exceptions! It needs time to work on your scalp, particularly if it’s your first time. Put it on well before you step into the shower/bath if you take less than 10 minutes. At the end of the shower, I rinse out the Jason shampoo, and use conditioner on my scalp to help keep my hair moisturized and also to get rid of some of the smell. For some that is enough and the scent that remains is barely noticeable. However, its not enough for me so I apply Moroccan oil, a light body spray/perfume into my hair, blow dry it and I’m good for the day. If you’re hesitant, just give one bottle a try – I’ve gotten all my friends and their kids hooked on this. Its definitely worth every penny!

First, I have to say that I need to write this review, because of all the confusing reviews on Amazon. Second I seriously considered doing a video review to show exactly how to use this video, but first that would be a little weird, and second I don't have any water proof video equipment! I bought this even after reading 20+ reviews on it because of one person who said it worked, and how. so now it is my turn to return the favor. for background, I am 34 years old, and have had severe dandruff since I was in 4th grade or so. I've tried every single product I could get my hands on to resolve this issue, it has been so bad, that I can scratch my head with a hairbrush and get enough scalp flakes to make several "ant hills" out of them on the floor. I am not joking, or kidding, nor is it that amusing, actually kind of scary. I could scratch my head all day, for weeks and it would keep flaking off. some flakes were the size of two side by side benadryl pills or slightly larger, on up to pieces the size of a small lima bean, I'm not talking pepper flake sized, or grain of sand, these were large sections of my scalp flaking off. This product is the only thing that has made this stop, and I've never been so happy. first I'll cover the smell, then I'll cover how to use it to get results. The odor from this product is a distinct Sulfur Odor, is VERY strong, WILL make your clothes, hairbrush, even fingers smell like sulfur, even 2 days after you last washed your hair! I recommend getting a body spray from bath and body works that you like, and spray your hair with it until the smell goes away. That is right, I said "GOES AWAY" the smell is created by a chemical reaction between the shampoo and your scalp. if your scalp is affected by the bacteria that causes the flaking, then it will react with the shampoo and cause the odor. When all the bacteria is dead, the odor does NOT occur. note, the bacteria will come back, see the directions below for more info. 1. You will need to take a shower! (unless you like to wash your hair in a sink...) 2. Wash your face first 3. rinse your face 4. use this shampoo to wash your hair, use PLENTY of it. my hair is about 3 inches long and I use about the same amount as the size of a Hershey Kiss. You want it to lather up a bit and cover your entire scalp, you need to massage it into your scalp with your finger tips. do this for a good 30 seconds or so (yes this will make you fingers stink like sulfur for a while (I think 6 or 7 hand washings should get rid of the smell...) 5. do NOT rinse your hair! 6. take the rest of your shower with the shampoo in your hair. 7. if you shave your legs do this too with the shampoo in your hair. 8. if you use a washcloth or loofah, rinse it out really good when you are done, with the shampoo in your hair! 9. I hope you understand the point is to keep the shampoo in your hair! I mean 5+ minutes, after about 3 you can just barely feel the cool tea tree feeling, barely. It doesn't get much stronger than that, I think the tea tree is a very small component in this shampoo. 10. hopefully you are still keeping the shampoo in your hair. 11. when you just cannot stand it any longer you can rinse your hair. 3-7 minutes works best. 12. repeat daily until the sulfur smell goes away. After the sulfur smell goes away, you can alternate between this shampoo and your normal (or other special shampoo, ie for oily hair, or for color treated hair, or for dry hair, or whatever else you normally use.) You will want to use Jason's shampoo every other day for half as long as it took to get rid of the smell (it took me 10-12 days before the smell went away, so I did every other day for the next 6 days). After those days are up, you can use Jason's Shampoo 1 time every 3 days and your normal shampoo the other times. If you do not wash your hair every day, add a no wash day in there (change every other to 1 out of 3 days, and change 1 out of 3 days to 1 out of 5 days using your normal shampoo the other times you do wash). IF you start to smell sulfur again, or have any itching, then go back to step one and repeat the entire process again. I am on week 3 right now, and have not had ANY problems. I no longer smell like sulfur, I did have to buy a new hair brush (no idea if the smell faded or not on it's own). And I tried several different things before I found a way to cover the smell coming from my hair (fyi, other people can smell it from 4 feet away!! or further depending on the breeze). So, if you can understand that you have to deal with a "smell" (pretty bad one at that) to get rid of a serious issue that has been affecting you for who knows how long, then this product is for you. if you have normal dandruff issues that come and go, by pass this product and use whatever works for you and does not smell. This product is for people who want to get rid of these problems and cannot find any other way. It is also cheaper than a doctor. If you have gobs and gobs of hair you may need to use gobs and gobs of this shampoo. I am not a scientist, but I understand how bacteria grows. You probably need to make sure this stuff covers ALL of your hair until the smell goes away the first time. It would be easier to get a short hair cut and then let it grow back out. After all isn't a couple of years of growing your hair out worth getting rid of flakes forever? That said, every human's body is different. I am sorry if this does not work for you after following my directions. I have have been so happy I found my self crying sometimes. I grew up with flaky hair and it had a serious affect on my self esteem and my social skills. I doubt I can repair any of that now, but I feel much better about myself and have even stopped checking for flakes!

Seit dem habe ich es mit allem versucht, und das Shampoo von Jason hat mich gerettet. 100% Weiterempfehlung! Zudem ist in diesem Shampoo Rosmarin Öl enthalten, was den Haarwuchs verstärkt.

El mejor champu anticaspa que he probado, me quita la caspa y me alivia el picor totalmente. He probado varias marcas y este producto es el mejor con diferencia. Sí, la olor no es la mejor del mundo pero no es tant fuerte como lo pintan algunos, y tampoco tan desgradable. Compra recomendada.

Itching relieved on first wash. Totally relieved by third wash. Free of sls,parabens!!! Controls dandruff. Bottle easily lasts for a month when used every other day by two people, both with long hair. Pricey but totally worth the price!! 😁
