Short Stories in Russian for Beginners

I bought this a while ago but just started reading a few days ago. I enjoyed it a lot. The stories were engaging. I followed the 6 step method presented in the front to the letter and was surprised how well it worked. I did not look up words as instructed. It was amazing how much more comprehensible the second time thru was (step 3), resolving almost all issues. Definitely built my confidence.....getting thru a book with 8 stories without having to look up almost anything (a first). It was perfect for my level. After all the time I have been learning Russian this might be the first thing I would call comprehensible input.

The book is great! The stories are engaging, easy to follow, and they use simple words. The book has a few stories, each one of which is split into bite-size chapters of around 2 pages each. To make the most out of the book, you need to be able to read Cyrillic, because it doesn’t have the phonetics. But if you know the sounds of the letters, then this book will be a great and fun tool to improve your Russian.

I'm revisiting studying Russian after having taken some courses in college years ago. Combined with other study, such as Duolingo and YouTube videos, this book has really helped. The stories are engaging and fun. It's well laid out and well organized. The little glossaries after each chapter are useful, as are the synopses (in Russian) and the multiple-choice questions. Granted, there are some errors, but I found them to be minor and easy enough to identify so as not to be misled. I took their advice and usually avoided looking up words I didn't know, in favor of trying to get what I could from context. I will say that the text included quite a few words I didn't know aside from what the glossary provided, whereas some of the words in the glossary seemed surprisingly basic (but not too many). I guess it depends on your background going into it.

The method of learning is interesting and effective. My language skills are somewhat below what they should be for this particular book but I feel that my vocabulary is increasing. I have only read through 1 1/2 chapters so far but have been enjoying it.

I have read a lot of beginning Russian texts and this one is my favorite. It is very easy to read, gives you vocabulary words at the end, and is an ongoing story that is entertaining. I have not finished the story yet, but it has kept me motivating to read, which is hard for me as a beginning Russian speaker. I would highly recommend to anyone in the beginning Russian phase of their linguistic journey! I recommend downloading the audible content with it so you can hear it being spoken. It does not come with audio, which I probably should have known, but would have liked an option for an audio setting with Kindle versus having to use audible and Kindle simultaneously. Overall, highly recommend!

This book has helped my Russian quite a bit. In recent years the emphasis has been on active vocabulary in language learning. And Skype allows one to practice active vocabulary easily. But this book helped me create Russian sentences like a Russian. The problem with only speaking or writing in a new language, is you are just translating your own language. Frequently my Russian sentences were grammatically correct, but just sounded strange to my Russian friends. Read this book, don't look up every word. Just try to follow along. It will improve your Russian in a natural manner. I wish audio was available. And there is no dictionary (which I think is good). Important phrases are explained. It is not for an absolute beginner. And you must know the Cyrillic alphabet. Resist the urge to look up every word. resist the urge to look up which "case" each phrase is in.. just read a bit every night.. You will make rapid improvement.

I have been studying Russian for about 2 years. Today, I finished reading this book. I really enjoyed it and thought that it was appropriately written for students. The sentence structures are not overly complicated so the reader can manage to read thru, so to speak, even when you may be uncertain of the exact meaning. Plus, the context always helps to figure out what you may not understand. The vocabulary of the book is excellent for students, and the authors repeat many of the verbs and other vocabulary in each story so as to reinforce them. Overall I thought it was an excellent book for students of russian language.

I bought this book on February 27th, 2021 and finally finished it on December 27th, 2021. I had been learning Russian for about 6 months before I bought it, but not as consistently as I would have liked because when you're a Finance student sometimes your life is hell. For whatever reason, either my mentality or the difficulty of the Russian language or the stress of modern life, I have found reading in Russian to be stressful and slow going. I have had a lot of success reading in French and Spanish. I think it may because there are not quite as many cognates in Russian, although they exist. Maybe I just haven't quite reached the tipping point in my vocabulary acquisition yet. Sorry, I know this is less of a book review and more about my progress in Russian but I guess I don't really know what to say about the book. I plan on rereading it. I did like that the first story was about a kid getting lost in a foreign country and I like that Olly talks about his experiences in foreign countries and how not all of them were good experiences. I also have the audio book and the audio quality is good. I think these graded readers are great value for the money. If you read it intensively and study the vocabulary (although this isn't Olly's recommended method but I never asked him), you can take in a lot of vocabulary for the price of one month of Lingq. I also used and enjoyed Lingq but ultimately decided to move on to graded readers because they are more my pace for the money spent and plus I have a kindle so I can look up vocabulary on it. Edit: The stories are more enjoyable on the second read.

Trae un diccionario al final de cada historia que siempre puedes consultar si hay dudas. Es precioso y tiene un tamaño ideal para llevarlo de viaje y seguir aprendiendo.

If you're like me and you finished the Russian Duolingo course and are looking around for other resources to use, this is a good one. I noticed the reading got increasingly comfortable as I progressed through the book. The short stories were interesting too. Highly recommended.
