If I accidentally sit on the transmit button for an extended period of time is there an alarm that sounds or does transmission timeout?

This radio has a talk out timer of 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, it will stop transmitting until you let go of the PTT button. Its in the user manual.

does it have a scan mode?

It does have a scan mode. There are a lot of good features in this radio but the radio is pretty bad. I have seen a lot of good reviews and made my decision based on them. I wish I would have gotten something different. Waste of 100 bucks if you ask me.

You will need any compatible CB Radio Antenna, ( The taller the better), if you want you can splice on an Optional Lighter plug to power it from an accessory outlet. An SWR meter is not required but will enable you to "fine tune" the antenna if used.

Can I replace the mic on this CB?

Yes, it uses standard President wired mic.
