Only in one direction. It does however have a "throw" of approx 12mm (so a sort of eccentic movement) so as to avoid heating/burning the area being polished by keeping the head in contact with the same spot for too long. IMO, not a bad item for the money.

Is the machine fairly loud&does it get hot after prolonged use?

Not uncomfortably hot but does get warm. Not very loud either which is good, a little heavier than you might percive at first but you get used to it.
