Can this be install on the exterior of a house?

it has to be installed directly on the water pipe is all i know, i live in an rv and my water pipe comes above ground into a little protected enclosure with a heat tape.  i installed or my male type friend who knows construction installed it on the water pipe at that point.  so it is outside my house but on the water line that feeds my house which is required.  that was last summer.  it has helped quite a lot but not perfect.  i'm thinking i maybe should have gotten a more powerful one and am now considering tying a more powerful  magnet from home depot to add to it.  my pipe is metal so it doesn't need a holder. i will consult with my construction friend first however.   i got the lowest priced one as recommended by the company  but have really hard well water so maybe should have had a more powerful unit in the first place???.

how does it work. I know it is not removing the calcium like a salt softener

OK, I'm not a scientist, but I believe it is some type of 'ion exchange' in the water molecules.  I bought & used a similar item about 35 years ago.  It worked and this one seems to work also. The magnetic field wraps around the water stream itself.  I don't believe the material of the pipe carrying the water plays any role whatsoever. Does it helps with the smell of the water? .. my water softener  broke,  so i installed one of this products but my water now it's yellow and stinks

Works good, water doesn't smell and it actually removed sliminess in the toilet tanks after the initial clean with soap and water. the bult up reisdue is almost completely gone. We have only lived in this place a year (was built in 1960 so everything was original when we moved here in 2014) or so and I saw this product and thought what the heck, start with toilets and water in kitchen. A drastic improvement to taste and smell.  Getting ready to put the second one on the new hot water tank's incoming cold waterline that should help even more with. Takes a little time but it does helpa lot
