Best headsets I've found, but ...
Update (2023-07-02): I'm leaving my previous review intact below and adding a few thoughts. Most of it still applies to some extent. But ... this is the best headset I've ever had for my purpose, and I still can't find anything better. I don't talk on the phone any other way. Better? Noise cancellation and sound quality has been good on most of the 11 I've owned (yes, 11). I think some were counterfeits. Everyone can understand me on the other end, and many I've talked to had no clue I was going down the road (even with the windows down). The last one I bought was in December of 2022. I have two that still work fine. I don't know if the most recent failure is one of the more recent purchases, or a very old one. It literally wore out. The last two that failed lost their skins. I bought my first one in April of 2016. I only have one reason for not upgrading to the 5200. I despise micro-USB. I love the magnet connector for these. I can just reach up and pull it off the charge cable and put it on my ear while driving with minimal distraction. I carry two on the truck within reach so that when one battery gets low the other is right there. I can even snap the charger on the headset without having to see it. Try that with micro-USB. So, if you have time and patience to fiddle with micro-USB, by all means get the 5200. It's a better headset in every way, except for that. Poly seems to have migrated this headset over much better than they had at the beginning of 2023. There's a new app, and it works. I haven't tried to update the headset online with a PC since the end of 2022. If Poly would update this headset's internals, and leave the size, shape, and charger intact, I'd pay more for that one than another one of these. If I knew that they had, I'd be buying one from their website. There are numerous SKUs of this headset. There's no way for us mere mortals to know what the differences are, if any. I suspect that one or two of the FFP models were counterfeit, but I'm going to gamble again. The warranty will be out long before any problems become apparent. Then I'll buy another one ... or the Voyager Legend 2024. I am buying another one so I'll have two spares. Only 2 of the 11 are left. I started keeping one at home too. My wife is still using a 5200, but she has a couple of these ... somewhere. Previously (circa January 2023): I think I've purchased my last Legend, even though I haven't tested it yet. It's time to find something better, and that's going to be hard. My ear fits these too well. Be aware that this headset appears to no longer be fully supported online. Plantronics is now Poly. I just downloaded the latest version of Plantronics Hub from Poly's support site, which appears to be the remnants of Plantronics support site. When I run the Plantronics Hub and try to update the headset I get, "Plantronics Hub is unable to connect to the server." I suspect that the update server no longer exists, though I can't be sure. The most recent firmware version is v.109, and may be the last one. That doesn't take away from the quality and usefulness of the headset at all. It's still the best noise-cancelling headset I can comfortably wear. Driving a truck I wear one all the time. Having said all that, I have had issues with some of the ones I've purchased more recently, and my wife has too. Some of them don't cancel noise as well as others, though they all come up as the same product, and the same firmware version. Early on, they were all flawless. Lately, they're not. We've had a couple that failed before we managed to destroy them ourselves. And it's possible that more modern devices don't connect as well to the older version of bluetooth these support. This is a very good legacy product. Last note: My wife has one of the newer 5200s, and didn't like it nearly as well as these.

if you use your phone to communicate throughout your work day, especially while driving, this is the headset to purchase
AMAZING headset!! Yes, it is a little pricey but well worth the cost. I was a little reluctant to spend $80 on a headset, but I am very happy that I made the plunge. I am a field Communications Technician out in the field, driving my work truck all day. I use my headset 12 to 13 hours a day so I need a good quality, good hands-free operation, and most importantly, a comfortable head set with great battery life, and this head set does it all!! As long as I am not sweating allot (don't want to short out the head set) I am able to keep this head set on for my entire day (13 hours) without any discomfort. I actually forget that I am wearing it. I need to use 2 phones throughout my day, all day (one wok owned I Phone, and my personal Droid) and this headset stays connected to both phones flawlessly. Over the last 10 years I have had at least 12 different headsets, from nearly every manufacturer but I have never had a headset that did not have difficulties when using 2 phones at the same time. The sound quality is perfect for music, radio, and phone. I setup surround sound for my music and I am AMAZED!! It sounds like I have a speaker in each ear. I don't know how they do this, but I was amazed!! The hands free features work flawlessly. For the most part, I don't have to touch my phone at all. I hit the call button on the boom, say, "Call Dispatch", the headset replies "Call Dispatch", I say yes, and the phone calls dispatch. If I get a call while I am driving, the phone rings and I can say "answer" or "ignore". The head set has a separate volume button which may seem unimportant, but it's not. It is very important when driving a company vehicle all day. There is no fumbling around trying to lower or increase volume while driving. I just picked up my headset to check the status... I had the headset on from 7:30 AM till 7:00PM yesterday, I used it all day to keep in touch with my companies dispatch and to pre-call customers. I left the headset on all night and right now, 20 hours from last using it and there is 4 hours of talk-time left!!! Keep in mind, I listen to my favorite radio station through my Droid phone during the day too. When a call comes through, or I make a call, the radio automatically lowers the volume. When I am done with the call my talk radio volume comes back to where I had it set previously. Granted, spending $80 on an item that is easily lost or broken is a difficult decision for the average worker-bee. But, if you use your phone to communicate throughout your work day, especially while driving, this is the headset to purchase. So far, I have not found one little negative feature.

Overall happy with purchase
I purchased a cheaper plantronics bluetooth headset locally and was very disappointed with the sound quality. I decided to try this one, and I'm glad I did. The different charger is not a huge deal for me, though I do plan to get the hard case soon (as it doesn't come with any kind of case) and the hard case uses a micro USB charger like the rest of my electronics. Good things: I was really skeptical about the sensor working well to change between the headset and the phone during phone calls. It has surprised me in a good way. It changes almost flawlessly. (The almost is that I grabbed the headset with my fingers in a certain spot and it thought it was on my ear so transferred back. But I let go and it went right back to my phone.) I even turned the bluetooth on from my phone and turned the headset on in the middle of a call (was off when I received the call) and the call transferred to the headset without a problem when I put it on. The sound quality is really good. I wouldn't say awesome, but I have no real problems with it. The voice commands work really well. I do speak a bit louder, but I'm not sure that I have to? The other headset I tried I had to practically scream at. This one I don't have to. Even with background noise and wind about 20 mph this headset performs well. Others can hear me just fine. I haven't tried it on one of our 60mph wind days, but I'm not sure anything could drown that out! Not so good things: The headset size for the over-the-ear part is not adjustable, so if you have smaller ears it will not fit as well. This causes the headset to rest mostly on the part that goes into my ear. It doesn't fit so well. However, it usually stays on so it is something I'm willing to live with. I have thought to try to fill in the upper part of the gap, but I'm not sure if that would throw off the sensors. This headset is not so comfortable with glasses. I do wear contacts, but since I bought this to use mainly while driving, sunglasses do present a challenge. It does still work, but is a bit more to maneuver. The volume is a little off, or at least just to me. The volume for calls is loud for me. I can't seem to get it to go low enough. However when I go to use the voice dialing or listen to the headset info (such as battery) the volume is really low on that. So the phone calls are much louder than the headset's own audio. This is great if you are in a noisy environment and have to hear the call, but not so great when you want to lessen the strain on your ear in a quiet area. Overall I'm very happy with this headset and would purchase again. It does what I need it to do, and the battery does seem to last. I'm not sure it lasts the advertised 7 hours, but it does last a long time. I haven't timed it.

Glad I grabbed it
This is a better quality. There is some weight to it but not so much that it’s uncomfortable. Fits well. Paired Quickly and easily. Sounds is excellent!

Has some great features, but...
I bought this for my wife but she's not thrilled with it. It's a little heavy - perhaps twice the weight or more of the Voyager 520s she has used for years. It doesn't have the in-the-ear fitting, it's more up-to-the-ear. I think that will just take some getting used to. My wife isn't really excited about it but I think that it announces callers by contact name rather than by number is pretty cool - especially when you can't immediately reach or find your phone. Voice answer is good, too, but takes a little practice to satisfy the voice recognition in the headset. So, why 3 stars instead of 4 or 5? The proprietary charging system is why. After having spent years buying expensive proprietary charging devices, especially expensive when buying car chargers, for Plantronics headsets I had hoped that Plantronics had joined the rest of the industry in using micro-USB for charging like my Motorola HX550 does. Instead, I find myself having to buy a bunch more proprietary chargers. The charger cable connects magnetically and is easily dislodged, leaving you with an uncharged headset. Even worse - terrible, even, is that the charging cable is only about 1 foot long! That means that you have to plug the thing in and reach to the floor just about to get to the headset. I don't know about you, but I don't have tables 12 inches off the ground right next to my outlets. Hanging a magnet connection by the heavy headset pretty much means the headset is on the floor. This charging system is just about the stupidest thing I have seen in cellular phone accessories. So.. that's why 3 stars. Update 7/12/14. After having this a few months I have to update. No longer is it worthy of even 3 stars but it's not quite bad enough to get one star since I haven't yet thrown it away. My wife eventually refused to use the headset and I got stuck with it when I lost my Voyager 520 - we had used those for years. What I found with the voyager legend is that, for all it's high-tech features, it really fails as a functional tool. Voice recognition on the phone is broken. On the 520, redialing always redialed the last dialed number - what you expect from redial. With the Legend, redial is not redial; it's dial. It dials the last call, inbound or outbound. So an incoming wrong number or telemarketing call breaks your redial to call back your office or wife. Redial on the legend almost never gets me to who it is that I want to talk. Even worse, with the Legend if your headset disconnects for any reason, just walking to the next room, redial will complain that there's no number to dial. When I installed the Legend I had to approve it to access my call history on my phone but it doesn't do anything useful with it. Even though it has access, the legend won't figure out who the last call was once you've walked out of the room and back, disconnecting and reconnecting the headset. Also, my phone had voice dial that worked with the 520. With the Legend it interrupts the voice commands to try to handle it in the Legend rather than the phone making voice dial on the phone impossible. We ended up getting my wife a Plantronics M55 for about 1/4 the price of the legend and she likes it fine even though it is more cheaply made and, therefore less comfortable than the Voyager 520. I'm more practical and won't throw away the Legend; I'll use it while it lasts but I won't buy another nor will I recommend that anyone buy one. Update 8/26/2014. Ok, I'm going with the one star now. Because I use my mobile phone for work,, I need reliability and quality in a headset. The Legend has a sensor that detects when you put the headset on and take it off. Apparently it is not very reliable. As I wear the Legend in important phone calls, it would switch back and forth between headset and handset to the point that I had important customers complaining. The Legend is in the trash replaced with the 29 dollar M55. That's about 150 dollars in headset and charging accessories/cables down the drain. What a waste.

Bluetooth mouthpiece defective part
Product works well, but it starts to come apart at the tip of the mouth piece, it’s started separating after about a month, had to put a drop of super glue on the tip. So far so good. Bought February,2 2026 Started coming apart April,4 2026 Would be five stars if it wasn’t for the defective part.

Positives FAR outweigh the negatives!
First off, a little about me and my BT needs. I own a small business and need to both keep my hands free and keep working while fielding a low to moderate call volume during an average day... and I work outside. I also carry two phones, personal and business, and want both connected. In the evenings I usually play or work on the computer for an hour or two after my wife goes to bed and used to use a wired headset so I wouldn't get in trouble for keeping her awake ;) When I checked reviews pre-purchase it was the sound/call quality that sold me on the Legend, and I was willing to accept the bigger bulkier (or so I expected) size as a trade off. What I have found is that the call quality is every bit as crazy good and clear as I'd hoped, but that my concerns about the bulk were really for nothing. Yes, the unit itself is much bigger than many BT devices out there, but the design is really really clever. The extra size sits behind your ear and you can barely see it or feel it. The "boom" mic that projects is actually quite sleek, I think. Other devices may BE smaller, but the legend "appears" just as small when on. I don't know how clear that explanation was, but suffice to say that I got the great call quality I'd hoped for/expected, and I got the added bonus of being very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the look. Sound quality... friends, customers, and my wife have all commented on how much better the sound from the Legend is than my previous BT devices. I DO agree with some of the reviewers who mentioned that the max volume is lacking. I would definitely like to be able to crank it up more at times. i find, however, that if I simply tweak the fit of the ear bud I can get the effect of the increased volume that I need. Connectivity... The first day I must admit the unit was 'wonky' w.r.t. pairing and connecting, but installing the latest firmware seemed to do the trick for the most part. As some users point out, there do seem to be occasional pairing/connecting 'glitches'. I have to manually re-connect either my phone or PC. This is a nuisance, yes, but relatively minor, as most of the time connections are super fast and flawless. This is definitely an area for improvement, because having to re-connect manually is annoying, albeit easy to do. The controls... they are a little small and finicky to use, but at least they are intelligently placed. Once you get familiar with the unit they are easy to use. Charging.... the magnetic charger is a relatively no-value-added gimmick. A standard micro usb like virtually all other devices use would have been WAY more practical. That's a pretty big negative, since it means that I'm constantly worried about losing the one and only charging cable I have. I hate non-standard stuff for no purpose! Also, the included charging cord is super short, which prevents you from using the headset while charging it. It might not be a good idea to do so, but I'd like to have the option. OVERALL... the positives FAR outweigh the negatives. I rated the Legend five stars not because it is perfect, but because despite its shortcomings it is a fantastic bluetooth headset with flawless sound and I love it!

The best headset I've found to date.
I've used a lot of headsets over the years, and I've constantly dealt with complaints about background noise, the inability to hear me speaking, or my own inability to hear others on a call. I've always felt that Plantronics headsets were among the best on the market for desktop telephony, and hoped that quality would carry forward to the Bluetooth marketplace. I'm happy to report that I was right. First, this headset it somewhat larger than most I've seen on the market of late. Something smaller would be nice, but my biggest concern is quality and durability. It has a 7-hour talk time, and when I'm in client meetings, I can easily use it for 4 hours a day. I've never had a problem with it having to be charged mid-day. I use this headset with an iPhone 4S, and to-date no one has known that I was using a headset. The background noise elimination WORKS, at least in my experience so far. Like I said previously, the unit is larger and the earpiece doesn't exactly fit in my ear, but rests on it. However, the volume is loud and clear enough that I have no problems hearing. I wear this headset from about 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday, and I can say that I often forget I have it on. It's comfortable and lightweight for its size. Featurewise, I probably use less of its functionality than most. However, I love the fact that I hear either the name or telephone number of a caller when a call comes in, and I can answer or decline the call by simply saying "Answer" or "Decline." I can also use this headset with Siri and any other audio application on my phone. It supports voice dialing and other features initiated at the headset, but I've not had the need to use these to date. Some reviewers have complained about the charging cord for the unit. It's about 7 inches long, and magnetically snaps onto the lower back side of the headset. I've never had a problem with it. I have a central charging station for my phone and other devices, so the short cord really isn't a problem for me. I've also charged it using a USB port on my notebook. I also find it interesting that I can upgrade the firmware in the headset with the latest features from Plantronics, plus I can configure how the headset functions using a web interface. The ability to customize the configuration was a welcome surprise. Based upon my experiences, I definitely recommend this headset to serious headset users that demand quality sound and background noise cancellation.
